"Oxford is leafy, quiet and lovely, the sort of place where couples get engaged. It's full of marinas, boat stores and 18th and 19th century buildings, of which the yellow Robert Morris Inn, founded about 1700, is the crown jewel."
Los Angeles Times

Robert Morris Inn
The circa 1710 Inn was once home to Robert Morris, Sr. and his son who gained fame as “Financier of the Revolution”. Located in the historic town of Oxford, MD, the Inn is just steps from the Tred Avon River and the historic Oxford-Bellevue car ferry. How To Eat Maryland Blue Crabs

When visiting the Eastern Shore you can try eating some famous Maryland Blue Crabs. This crab video will teach you step by step the process of how to eat steamed Maryland Blue Crabs. The summer and fall are the best times to eat Maryland crabs.

Interesting Maryland Crab Fact - "Chesapeake" comes from an American Indian Algonquin word meaning "great shellfish waters," and the Maryland blue crab continues to make a reputation for itself.

One popular Eastern Shore restaurant well known for steamed crabs is the Mastehead at Pier Street Marina in Oxford, MD.

"Masthead at Pier Street Marina. The film industry loves this casual locale. Scenes from "Wedding Crashers" were filmed at the Inn at Perry Cabin, and scenes from "Failure to Launch" were filmed at the Masthead, where you can see the table at which Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey shared their meal. Go at midday, because George Kellum is still the lunch chef after long years of cooking in local kitchens. Best dish: anything on the menu when served at picnic tables on the huge wrap-around deck, where you can toss your fries to the gulls and ducks. Better they should eat them than you should." St. Michaels clings to its maritime tradition, and lots of visitors arrive by boat at one of the town's many marinas on the Miles River. Continue down Route 33 to charming and remote Tilghman, where watermen and fresh seafood reign. Oxford was once a busy seaport, home of Revolutionary War financier Robert Morris." Frommer's

Oxford Maryland Bed and Breakfast Waterfront

Oxford, Maryland is a romantic location to have a bed and breakfast getaway. Sandaway Waterfront Lodging B&B has a large waterfront lawn and private sandy beach for guest to enjoy. The Main House dates back to 1875 and once was an Oxford residence. There are eighteen bed and breakfast rooms at Sandaway, most having water views with screened-in porches. Sandaway's Bed and Breakfast video is just under 2 minutes long.

"I stayed in one of the inn's summer cottages, with waist-high wainscoting, a step-up king bed, a screened porch overlooking the water and a polished white clawfoot tub in which I took bubble baths as often as I could. Or I occupied an Adirondack chair on the lawn, watching sailboats come and go, wondering precisely why we're magnetically drawn to the water.
It was a deep riddle, I decided, that would no doubt require many more visits to the Eastern Shore to solve."

Talbot County Maryland Movies

Did you know the movie Failure To Launch had scenes filmed in Oxford, Maryland? Some of the crew for Failure To Launch stayed at Sandaway Waterfront Lodging in Oxford, MD.

"Everyone, including myself, likes a good romantic comedy every now and then. After watching a few of the trailers for Failure To Launch, I figured it was that time.
Failure To Launch is basically like all the romantic comedies before it. Good looking man (this time played by Matthew McConaughey) has a phobia or quirk (this time: 30-something year old, living with parents) about him that makes it difficult for him to meet the right lady (this time played by Sarah Jessica Parker) - yet in the end they manage to make it work. As in most cases this tried and true method works - as it does here.
Why does it work? The main reason is the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously. Many movies int his genre can, at times, actually believe the shit they’re selling. That’s not the case with Failure To Launch. Mixed into the love story, are some very stupid parts, that the writers try to make sense of in the end. McConaughey gets attacked by a chipmunk and a dolphin and some strange lizard while rock climbing. Only at the end do we come to find out it was because he was out of harmony with nature, but the scenes themselves were quite stupid. Another overwhelming reason for success is that the movie stars two very good looking actors. Matthew McConaughey has to be at the top of People Magazine’s top 10 good looking people. And he generally seems likable and friendly - maybe it’s his southern roots. Sarah Jessica Parker, she’s an enigma. One helluva of a fantastic body - but a face that makes you want to turn your eyes away. Almost as if God put a horse head on the body of a Playmate. Yet, her friendly persona makes her a great fit for this kind of movie. Also, sprinkled throughout the movie are some very funny moments. Terry Bradshaw roaming around naked through his house will give you some mixed emotions. Zooey Deschanel, Parker’s roommate, steals a great many scenes by offsetting Parker’s exuberence with her character’s melodramatic self-loathing.
All said, if you need a moment to just have a relaxing time, watch some good looking folks have fun, then Failure To Launch is for you."

"Oxford was the Colonial capital and is one of the oldest towns in Maryland. The official founding was in 1683. To get there evenings, make the 30-minute drive from St. Michaels. But before dusk, it's more fun to take the daylight-only, 10-minute ferry ride over the Tred Avon river. The nine-car Oxford-Bellevue ferry claims to be the oldest in the nation, in operation for 300 years. That's the best way, I think, to get on the local water without an outboard. Bikers use the ferry as part of a loop through all the local towns." Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Oxford Maryland Sailing

Here is wonderful example of some sailing that takes place in the Chesapeake Bay tributaries around Oxford, Maryland. The Tred Avon River and Choptank River next to Oxford, Maryland create a wonderful environment for sailing.

"This is a snapshot of some Summer '08 Chesapeake Bay Log Canoe racing on the Chesapeake tributaries taken with an Oregon Scientific ATC2K camera aboard the "Island Bird" with the exception of one shot from "Jay Dee" (thanks Mariana). These sailboats average about 30 feet in length and have a crew of 5 to 22 depending on size. Most are over 50 years old and some are over 100 years old. Log canoes were originally seafood harvesting workboats used on the Chesapeake. They get their name from the log construction of the original hulls, a feature still visible from within the cockpit, although they are now have a fiberglass outer skin. The canoes are capable of exceeding 12kts and in ideal conditions a log canoe can step up on plane. They are very narrow relative to length and are thus quite unstable. This requires the use of 10 to 15 foot wooden planks ("springboards" or just "boards") with crew weight in order to provide leverage against the rotational pressure of the massive sails. Log canoes do not have fixed keels in part because of the very shallow waters where they race. A total of perhaps 22 exist, of which about 19 can float, and of those 15 or so can race. There are approximately 11 that consistently compete during the summer racing season that occurs mainly in Saint Michaels, Maryland. Other races are held in Oxford and Chestertown, Maryland."

By VICKI FISHER
The (Easton) Star Democrat

OXFORD, Md. (AP) - Avocado, salmon and dill, and tomato and basil are not flavors you would expect to find at an ice cream shop, but Victor Barlow is not your typical ice cream maker.
Barlow's extensive collection of ice cream recipes puts Baskin and Robbins to shame. Thirty-one flavors? Try 500.
A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Barlow says he has more than 500 recipes for ice cream in his cache, but his wife, Susan, thinks it's more like 600. The reason he tries so many flavors, he says, is because it gets people talking.
"I'll try anything," says Barlow as he mans The Scottish Highland Creamery cart at the Oxford Farmers market July 12. The weather is muggy, to say the least, but Barlow sweats it out while wearing traditional Scottish attire, kilt and all.
Barlow grew up in Edinburgh and lived above an Italian ice cream parlor that dated back to 1907. He began working there at age 15 and later became the shop's manager, the only person outside of the family bloodline to learn the secret family ice cream recipes.
After meeting Susan while she was on vacation in Scotland, the two moved to the U.S., married and opened an ice cream and fudge shop in Georgia. They later moved to Easton and opened The Scottish Highland Creamery in Oxford this April.
The ice cream and fudge shop is located behind Schooner's Landing along Tilghman Street near the boat ramp and Barlow sells ice cream at the Oxford Farmers Market on Wednesdays. He also scoops ice cream at private parties and corporate events around the Mid-Shore and even as far as Frederick.
The ice cream has led to long lines outside Schooner's Landing with customers even coming in by the boatload from the dock there. Barlow also has been doing a lot of business at private and corporate events serving ice cream in a kilt, of course.
The flavors at the Highland Creamery change on a daily basis. On Wednesday there was tiramisu, Mexican vanilla, Belgian chocolate, strawberry, cookies and cream, lemon sorbet and tomato and basil, which Barlow says is popular at dinner parties as a palate cleanser between meals.
"At the end of the night, I open up a beer and decide what to make the next day," Barlow says. Sometimes he gets up as early as 6 a.m. to start making fresh ice cream from his small machine at the shop in Oxford. Barlow uses local ingredients, fresh milk, cream and butter and flavorings imported from Italy. The Belgian chocolate comes from Belgium.
"It's an Italian recipe with Scottish flair," he says.
What sets it apart from other ice creams, Barlow says, is that it's not mass-manufactured and includes hand-prepared ingredients. The end result is an ice cream that is much like Italian gelato, which is how it is presented in rectangular metal bins.
There are at least 14 flavors made everyday, he says, and the most popular are Mexican vanilla, Belgian chocolate, cookies and cream and strawberry. In Scotland, however, the most popular flavor is whiskey, he says. He's also made Guinness- and Baileys-flavored ice cream.
The one flavor that was the biggest failure? Tuna. "That didn't go too well," he says.
Some other flavors he's tried include Gatorade, lavender, Pooh Bear crunch, corn, bubble gum, birthday cake, Moon Pie and Old Bay sorbet.
Many customers request flavors, Barlow says, and he usually knows each of them by name, face or favorite flavor after their first visit. Nearly all of them know him on a first-name basis, too.
"His calling is this," says Susan, who can be found at the shop near the boat dock. "I'm so proud of everything he does." When Barlow decided to take a break from making ice cream a few years ago, Susan says she'd never seen someone look like the life had died from their eyes like his.
"It's just what he's meant to do," she says.

Table Talk: Salter returns to the Eastern Shore
June 01, 2010
"There's very big news on the Eastern Shore, with the arrival of celebrity chef Mark Salter at the Robert Morris Inn in Oxford. You might remember the British born Salter from his highly regarded 17-year stretch as executive chef at the Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels. This move reunites him with Ian Fleming, Perry Cabin's former manager. Salter, who will be acting as the 300-year-old inn's proprietor as well, is ramping up for an official June 25 opening for the main dining room and the newly renamed Salter's Tavern.
Salter sent along some sample menus, and reading them made me very hungry. On the fine-dining menu, alongside his signature crab cake and Maryland crab spring roll with pink grapefruit, avocado and toasted almond, Salter is planning pretzel-encrusted soft shells, a Sri Lankan-rubbed grouper fillet, and wild rock fish with succotash, soft polenta and local beans."

"My husband and another couple visited this restaurant on June 28 and it was just as good as the first time we went in the summer of 2006. The gas pump out front throws you for a loop the first visit, but we were glad we didn't turn around and leave like we considered. The menu has some unique dishes. The baked oyster appetizer was to die for, and the guys raved over the seafood pasta. I had the pork tenderloin wrapped in the pastry which was good, but the pork was a little over cooked and I had to request a steak knife. The duck with blueberry sauce I had in 2006 was one of the best meals I ever had and definitely deserves another turn on the menu. The presentation with fresh flowers was just as it had been in 2006. The staff is of mixed ages and all were friendly and helpful, even the younger ladies. We thoroughly enjoyed it AGAIN and will definitely visit them the next time we are on the Eastern Shore."

"We recently visited Latitude 38 on a summer Sunday afternoon....When we first arrived, there were only a handful of cars in the parking lot. We decided to "check it out" and wow, were we ever so glad that we went inside to experience a most wonderful crowd of "local" people having food and drinks .... and having lots of fun talking to the other folks in the area. This place is a MUST! We had the special that evening and there was more than enough for two people! By the time we left, the parking lot was overflowing with cars...and the inside was packed. We plan on going back very soon to enjoy another afternoon of great food and crowd!"

"Can't wait to go back again!! This is my favorite local's place. If you are looking for great food with a fun atmosphere this is the place for you. I have encountered a short wait time occassionally during the busy summer weekends but it is well worth it for the delicious conch fritters and steamed crabs."

"Appetizers were good, although we didn't order anything complicated, mostly steamed shrimp. Most just ordered pub fair, but my burger was good. Service was pretty good. There is an outdoor bar on the deck. I would not go to this place for fine dining, but if you want decent food in a scenic setting on the water, it's a nice place."
